Scouting has three specific objectives, commonly referred to as the "Aims of Scouting." They are character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.  Those that demonstrate these at a high level may become an Eagle Scout.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Those who attain this rank are called an Eagle Scout or Eagle. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by less than 1.7 million young men. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle".

Eagle Scouts are expected to set an example for other Scouts and to become the leaders in life that they have demonstrated themselves to be in Scouting. As such, they are disproportionately represented in the military, service academy graduates, major professions, business and politics.
